Officers continue crackdown on notorious road over ‘standards of driving’ concern

The amount of crashes and dangerous driving on St Helens Road is so extensive it has even been mentioned in Parliament.

Police have stepped up patrols in and around St Helens Road, with officers speaking to drivers just yesterday.

Vehicles were stopped to ensure driving standards were being met and police have confirmed that the patrols will continue.

A spokesperson for GMP said: “We are aware of the ongoing concerns by residents of the standards of driving in this area.

“Vehicles were stopped to ensure driving standards were correct and these patrols will continue.”

MP for Bolton West, Phil Brickell, brought the issue up in the House of Commons after constituents frequently came to him with safety concerns.

He said that he mentioned the need for extra police surveillance around speeding.

A bus lane on the road was shortened earlier this year after being said to cause “confusion” to help make the road safer.

The lane was opposite an Asda supermarket and was complained about by road users.

Cllr Ayyub Patel, of Rumworth, said at the time that the reduction would make it “a lot easier for people to navigate around Asda”.

He added: “Safety was one of the main reasons, we were wanting to improve the overall safety of the area but especially where residents had raised concerns around St Helens Road.”

Towards the end of July, the council confirmed that it had secured “safer roads funding” to help improve safety around St Helens Road in particular.

This would include further cameras and data gathering measures.

The cameras will assess safety records and “near misses” as well as keeping a database on red light running and speeding to share with Greater Manchester Police.
