Bangkok zoo offers refuge for abandoned reptiles

As Bangkok’s condominium dwellers seek a closer connection with nature, many are turning to exotic pets such as snakes, spiders, turtles and lizards. But when owners move, change jobs or travel abroad, the animals are often surrendered to Peuan Deratchan Zoo, a small sanctuary Bang Khen district, Bangkok, founded by former Zoological Park Organisation director Pisit na Patalung.
The zoo, whose Thai name means “Friends of Beasts”, provides a home for more than 100 animals while promoting responsible ownership, conservation and a less negative view of creatures commonly regarded as frightening or undesirable.
