KANCHANABURI: Authorities found an internet cable illegally laid from a border house in Sangkhla Buri district to a possible casino in Myanmar on Thursday.

According to the Office of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), a team led by acting NBTC secretary-general Trairat Viriyasirikul that included police and army soldiers searched two houses in tambon Nong Lu of Sangkhla Buri district after officials had detected unusually high data usage compared to average households.

Searching Moo 9 village, officials found an internet cable running from one house to another on the Thai-Myanmar border with its door opened to the Myanmar side.

Officials used an optical time-domain reflectometer to check the length of the cable. The reading showed that it ran a distance of 350 metres farther into Myanmar, far enough to reach a local casino.

The owners of the houses have been charged with illegal telecommunications operations.
