Beautiful tributes paid to much loved and “larger than life” figure
Dorothy Higson worked for many years as a dinner lady at St Andrew’s CE Primary School in Over Hulton, and was a faithful attendee of St Andrew’s church for many years.
In later life she also worked at The Watergate in Hulton as a waitress.
Son Colin Higson said: “The mould’s been broken now.
“She had a lot of friends in the local community.
“Even after she retired she’d say she didn’t feel like herself unless she went out five times a week.”
Born on January 27 1941, Dorothy’s first role was as a hairdresser, opening two shops as a young woman.
She gave up work to become a full-time mum when her first child – Colin – was born.

Her husband – also named Colin – was a conservative councillor in Bolton, which led to their joint invitation to The Queen’s garden party in 1993.
Many people still remember her from her time as a dinner lady at St Andrew’s CE Primary School between 1975 and 1995.
Former pupil Liz Barton said on Facebook: “Aww I remember her from St Andrews.
“She always use to give me midget gems at dinner time.
“RIP Mrs Higson.”
Dorothy’s son Colin stated that COVID was a big difficulty for a woman as outgoing as Dorothy.
Colin said: “Before COVID she used to go out every day.
“She’d quite often be seen around council meetings, banging the drum for Over Hulton.”
Dorothy’s funeral will be held at St Andrew’s Church Over Hulton at 2pm on Monday 22 December.
A celebration of her life will then take place at Daisy Hill Football Club.
Family flowers only and any donations in her memory can be made to St Andrews Church.
