‘Callous predator’ caged after attempting to rape 8-year-old girl

Paul Proctor, aged 61, committed the offence in the 1990s in Fife, Scotland against the girl when she was just eight years-old.

Proctor, of Ramsay Avenue, Farnworth, stood trial before the High Court in Edinburgh from February 11 this year, after the offending was reported to police in 2020.

The jury found him guilty on February 14, before he was sentenced on May 14.

He was ordered to serve six years in prison for attempted rape and using lewd, indecent and libidinous practices and behaviour.

Detective Sergeant Ross French from Fife Public Protection Unit said: “Paul Proctor is a callous predator and he is now being held accountable for his depraved actions.

“Had it not been for the strength of his victim and other significant witnesses, his crimes may have gone unpunished. I hope that knowing he is now behind bars will offer them some sort of solace.

“This case also highlights how time is no barrier for us when investigating sexual crimes. If you have ever been subjected to any such offences, then please come forward and report it. You can be assured of being fully supported by specialist officers and our partner agencies.”

His victim bravely spoke to The Bolton News about the horrific ordeal.

She said: “It has just affected my whole life. I started seeing a counsellor when I was 16, the counselling brought it back up.

“It has left me with mental health issues. You don’t know who to trust.

“It comes back and goes away, I just take each day as it comes. I never said anything about it when I was younger.

“To other victims who are out there, you can do it.”

She also thanked the police, in particular DS French, for their help.

The woman added: “I am just glad he is in prison now, and not out there to do it to anybody else.

“I thought he might have shown remorse but he didn’t show anything.

“It has put me through hell over the last five years. It wasn’t good enough what he did to me, he put me through more.”
