‘Drug driving, assaulting officer, theft’: Five recent cases heard by magistrates

Drink driving

A man was banned from the roads after drink driving.

Vincent Hart, 58, admitted to Wigan and Leigh Magistrates’ Court that he had driven a Ford Focus in Stirling Road, Bolton, on February 20 this year.

He had been over the legal limit for alcohol at the time.

Hart, of Stirling Road, was banned from driving for 23 months with a disqualification period of 23 weeks.

He was also fined £750 and ordered to pay £85 costs with a £300 surcharge.

Drug driving

A man was given a driving ban after drug driving.

Sean Barton, 34, admitted to Wigan and Leigh Magistrates’ Court that he had driven in Hamilton Street, Bolton, while over the legal limit for Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol.

This was on August 14 last year.

Barton, of Lenham Gardens, Little Lever, was banned from driving for 12 months and fined £80.

He was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a surcharge of £32.

Assaulting officer

A man was ordered to pay compensation after assaulting a police sergeant.

Kieran Holt, 43, admitted to Wigan and Leigh Magistrates’ Court that he had assaulted the officer during the execution of his duty in Bolton.

This was on March 9 this year.

Holt, of Churchtown Avenue, Bolton, was ordered to pay compensation of £250.

He was also ordered to pay a fine of £600 with costs of £85 and surcharge of £240.

Knife and drugs

A man was given a community order after admitted to having a knife and drugs in his possession.

Shane Murphy, 21, admitted to Wigan and Leigh Magistrates’ Court that he had cannabis resin in his possession in Bolton on December 20, 2024.

That same day he also had a lock knife in his possession in the car park behind the Britannia Inn.

Murphy, of Malton Avenue, was given a community order up to July 10, 2026 and was ordered to attend appointments with a responsible officer for up to 15 days.

He was also ordered to do 99 hours of unpaid work within 12 months.

Magistrates also ordered that the cannabis be seized and destroyed.

Stealing from shop

A man was ordered to pay compensation after stealing from a shop.

Jamie Holden, 46, admitted to Wigan and Leigh Magistrates’ Court that he had stolen £225.75 worth of meat and cheese items from the Co-op in Horwich.

This was on February 3 this year.

Holden, of Nasmyth Street, Horwich, was ordered to pay £225.75 in compensation and a fine of £120.

He was also ordered to pay costs of £85.
