Revealed: Most popular baby names in Bolton
The Office for National Statistics has announced the most popular names for boys and girls born in 2023, the most recent data available.
Fatima and Khadijah have tied for most popular girl’s names in Bolton, with 17 girls given those names last year.
This replaced Maryam, the top name in Bolton for 2022, when 15 parents chose that name for their newborn daughter.
Muhammad was the most common boy’s name in the area – with 110 baby boys called that in Bolton in 2023.
It has stayed at top for the past three years with 342 newborn boys called Muhammad in the borough in that time.
Last year, it was the most common boy’s name across the UK, overtaking Noah.
The Office for National Statistics’ report said: “Muhammad has overtaken Noah as the top name for baby boys in England and Wales, followed by Noah and Oliver.
“Muhammad was the second most popular name in 2022 and has been in the top 10 most popular names for baby boys in England and Wales since 2016.”
The top three girls’ names were still Olivia, Amelia and Isla – the same as last year.
Olivia has remained the top name for eight years.
Lily rose in the ranks as the fourth most common name, followed by Freya as the fifth.
But last year, the top 100 baby names list saw some new entries – like Hazel, Lilah, Autumn, Nevaeh and Raya for girls, as well as Jax, Enzo and Bodhi for boys.
And celebrity culture continued to influence what babies are called.
The report said: “Pop culture continues to influence the popularity of baby names including music artists such as Billie Eilish and Lana Del Rey, celebrity baby names from the Kardashian-Jenner family such as Reign and Saint, and film stars such as Margot Robbie and Cillian Murphy.
“Some names were more popular depending on the time of year.
“In December, Holly, Robyn and Joseph were more popular, whereas names like Summer and Autumn were popular in their respective seasons.”
