Taxi firm operator says he warned police over woman on M66 bridge
It follows an incident just two days into the new year when a woman was treated in hospital after falling from a bridge on the M66.
Traffic was stopped on the M66 southbound near Ramsbottom due to a ‘police-led incident’ late on Saturday afternoon.
The man, who did not wish to be named, said he just ‘sensed’ something was not right and urged people not to judge those who may be going through a difficult time.
He said: “The woman first called and had asked to be picked from Fairfield Hospital and be taken to a bridge.
“The call goes through to the driver and he said he could not complete the job.
“I felt something was not right and then called the police, told them there may be a concern for welfare.”
The operator showed evidence of calls that he alerted police at 3.55pm and then again at 4.14pm.

The woman then called again and asked to be dropped off at a location nearby.
The man said: “She sounded quite jovial to be honest. So, you can never tell.
“The second driver, who was a lot older, wanted to help and said the woman wanted to meet a friend.
“He said he dropped her off at a nearby location around the corner from the bridge. You can’t stop on the bridge even if you wanted to.
“I called the police again and they then said they would be looking into it.”
He said: “I think it was just a hunch.
“I have never had a situation like this before.
“People can be judgmental, but you never know what is going on in a person’s head.”
Police said they were called when a woman had been spotted on the wrong side of a bridge.
A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: “At around 4pm on Saturday, January 3, officers were called to a concern for welfare of a woman who was reported on the wrong side of the bridge and subsequently fell onto the carriageway of the M66.
“The woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries and remains at the hospital where she is being treated.”
