Bolton university jumps up the league table as the best universities named

This is an increase of six places compared to last year.

With its main campus situated on Deane Road, the university came out on top in Greater Manchester for student satisfaction.

A University of Greater Manchester spokesperson said: “We are very pleased to note that the University is top in Greater Manchester for student satisfaction (79 per cent) and 18th in the UK in the Complete University Guide 2026.

“Providing the best possible overall experience for all our students is our primary focus, and it is fantastic to see that everyone’s hard work has been recognised in this respect.

“It is also encouraging to see that overall we have moved up the league table ranking and we look forward to making continued progress as our new Medical School is on track to welcome its first cohort of medical students in September at our £40m Institute of Medical Sciences building which is located in the grounds of the Royal Bolton Hospital.

“The Medical School will provide top-quality training for the next generation of doctors, and its launch will be a game-changer for Bolton and the wider region, helping to address the ongoing workforce challenges in the health sector.”

The university scored 479 out of 1000 as an overall rating.

The rankings are based on measures like student satisfaction, graduate prospects, research quality and more

The university was 24th for student staff ratio but for research intensity it was ranked joint 113th.

University of Manchester was ranked 28, University of Salford was placed 79 and Manchester Met was ranked 50.

Top of the league was University of Cambridge  followed by Oxford, London School of Economics and St Andrew’s University.

In May the Vice Chancellor of the University of Greater Manchester, was suspended following “serious allegations.”

The Deane Road based university announced that Professor George E Holmes had been suspended alongside the Provost and another senior member of academic staff.

This comes after an investigation by PriceWaterhouseCooper into allegations made about the university that surfaced earlier this year.

The Bolton News has previously reported that the allegations are understood to surround financial matters – but it is not clear at this stage what the nature of the “serious allegations” which have led to Professor Holmes’s suspension are.
