A social media dispute between Thai and Cambodian users over Cambodian Prime Minister’s military education in the United States has escalated.

The debate centres on Hun Manet’s attendance at the US Military Academy at West Point, and whether his entry was connected to a regional quota arrangement involving Thailand’s armed forces during the mid-1990s.

The issue resurfaced after Hun Manet, who graduated from West Point on May 29, 1999, posted a message on Facebook commemorating the anniversary of his graduation.

The post triggered renewed discussion online, particularly among Thai users, leading to competing narratives about how his admission was arranged.

Cambodian social media users and commentators say Hun Manet entered West Point as part of a cooperation framework between Cambodia and the US.

He received a nomination from Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence and was supported through official US defence education channels, with no involvement from Thailand, they said.

In contrast, some Thai online users and academics questioned whether, during the 1995-1999 period, West Point placements for certain international cadets in the region were coordinated through arrangements linked to the Royal Thai Army.

The discussion developed into a wider exchange over historical military cooperation and credit for foreign training opportunities.

Hun Manet later addressed the matter in a Facebook statement, saying he had not responded to similar claims in the past to avoid prolonging controversy.

He said his admission was based on a direct Cambodian nomination system and US Embassy endorsement in Phnom Penh.

He outlined that West Point cadet selection requires formal nomination by a candidate’s own Ministry of Defence, followed by approval from US diplomatic channels in the applicant’s home country.

Hun Manet said his documentation clearly identifies him as a Cambodian cadet.
