Three garages and car destroyed in ‘deliberate’ fire as police investigate

Two fire engines were sent to the blaze near Rainshaw Street in Astley Bridge at around 2pm yesterday, Monday.

Crews fought the fire with breathing apparatus and warned residents to stay inside to avoid smoke and possible burning asbestos due to the garages’ construction.

Three garages and a car inside one of them were left destroyed.

Police have been informed as the fire is believed to have been started “deliberately“.

Fire crews were in attendance for an hour.

A watch manager at Bolton Central Fire Station said: “Firefighters in breathing apparatus fought the fire as there was asbestos involved because of the garages’ construction. They are [fairly] old.

“We had to tell all the neighbours to stay inside because of the airborne smoke.

“The fire destroyed all three garages along with a car that was inside one of them.

“We believe it was a deliberate ignition. Police have been informed.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service added: “Shortly after 2.20pm on Monday afternoon two fire engines from Bolton and Farnworth fire stations were called to reports of a fire near to Rainshaw Street, Bolton.”

“Crews arrived quickly and used two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire which was covering three garages.

“Crews remained at the scene for approximately one hour.”

Greater Manchester Police are investigating the cause of the blaze.

A force spokesperson said: “At around 2.30pm on Monday, emergency services were called to reports of a fire at a garage on Rainshaw Street, Bolton.

“The fire was put out and enquiries are ongoing into the cause.”
